Sensory differences
Sensory stimuli: home vs the office¶
At home¶
- Teenage neighbour shouting unpredictably at their computer game/football match
- Next door’s dog barking literally any time they’re left home alone
- Tumble dryer in the garage over the street (all weekend)
- Several big tuned up cars that like to rev a few times before setting off
- Power tools in nearby houses & gardens, especially lawnmowers and hedge trimmers
Also good stuff!
- Bird song: the same blackbird that comes back to his territory every year; sparrows twittering; magpies & jackdaws chattering
- Little solar powered fountain in the pond
- Wind blowing in the trees
- Someone’s wind chime nearby
In the office¶
- People talking at desks and phones ringing near and far
- The team two desks over doing full-time customer who think they need to shout into the phone all day
- The high-speed sheet-fed scanner percussively chugging through pages, but not consistently enough to get used to the rhythm
- The feeling on my skin of smart/business-appropriate clothes, generally artificial fibres and long legs/sleeves: these fibres especially make me feel too hot or too cold without anywhere in between
- Lighting too bright or too dim (depending on the task) and no ability to control it
